What is Spedra?
Spedra is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It contains the active ingredient Avanafil, which belongs to the same class of drugs as Viagra (Sildenafil), Cialis (Tadalafil) and Levitra (Vardenafil). They are known as PDE-5 inhibitors.
How does Spedra work?
Spedra works by helping blood vessels in the penis to relax. This improves blood flow to the penis, allowing an erection to be achieved and maintained, upon sexual arousal.
Spedra will only work if you are sexually stimulated.
How long does Spedra take to work?
Spedra is fast acting and can take effect in as little as 15 minutes if taken on an empty stomach. Food reduces the absorption of Spedra it is best taken on an empty stomach, or at least 2 hours after food. Its average time to action when taken in optimal conditions, is around 15-30 minutes, however, this can vary upon the individual. It is the fastest acting ED tablet available.

How to take Spedra tablets
Take one tablet around 15 minutes before sexual activity.
Tablets should be taken on an empty stomach. Avoid alcohol.
Spedra 100mg
This is the recommended starting dose. Dose adjustments may be required depending on the response to treatment.
Spedra 50mg
This is the dose that is recommended if you have success with Spedra 100mg, but experience side effects.
Spedra 200mg
This dose will be recommended if you have limited success with Spedra 100mg. The higher the dose, the higher the chances of success. This however, comes with an increased risk of experiencing side effects.
Spedra ingredients
Active ingredient: Avanafil
Inactive ingredients: Fumaric acid, mannitol, magnesium stearate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, calcium carbonate and ferric oxide yellow (E172).
Spedra side effects
Like all medication, Spedra can cause side effects.
Side effects of Spedra include:
Common – affecting up to 10% of users:
- Headache
- Nasal congestion
- Facial flushing
Uncommon – affecting up to 1% of users:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Back ache
- Breathlessness when exercising
- Blurred vision
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Stomach ache
Rare – affecting up to 0.1% of users:
- Diarrhoea
- Dry mouth
- High blood pressure
- Increased urination
- Insomnia
- Nosebleed
- Blood in urine
If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek urgent medication attention:
- An erection lasting for longer than 4 hours
- Blurred vision or a sudden loss of vision
- Decrease or loss of hearing
- Chest pain
- Signs of an allergic reaction such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the nose, eyes, mouth, throat

Do not take Spedra if you have:
- Angina or other serious heart conditions
- Had a stroke or heart attack within the last 6 months
- Low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure
- Serious liver or kidney problems
- Altered vision due to lack of oxygen to the eye or certain eye conditions which are hereditary such as retinitis pigmentosa
You should inform your GP or pharmacist of any medication conditions you have, so that they can check if Spedra is safe for you to take.
Spedra interactions
Spedra can interact with certain medication such as:
- Nitrates used to treat angina such as glyceryl trinitrate and isosorbide mononitrate
- HIV and aids medication such as ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, nelfinavir, atazanavir
- Antifungals such as ketoconazole, itraconazole
- Antibiotics such as clarithromycin and erythromycin
- Medication to reduce blood pressure in the lungs such as riociguat
- Alpha-blockers used to treat high blood pressure and an enlarged prostate such as alfuzosin and tamsulosin
- Anti-arrythmias used to treat irregular heartbeat such as quinidine, amiodarone and sotalol
- Epilepsy medication such as phenobarbital carbamazepine

It is safe to drink moderate amounts of alcohol. Excess consumption can cause a drop in blood pressure. This will result in symptoms such as dizziness, light headedness and fainting.
You cannot take Spedra on the same day as other ED treatments.
It is safe to take Spedra every day. You should check this with you doctor or pharmacist beforehand.
During clinical trials, Spedra had a success rate of 58% in those that took the recommended starting dose of 100mg. The 200mg tablet was shown to be effective in 59% of subjects, whilst the 50mg tablet had a success rate of 47%. Although the success rate of Spedra is not as high as other ED treatments, it's targeted action mean that the chances of getting any side-effects are low. Spedra's quicker onset of action are appealing to many men, helping to achieve and maintain erections for spontaneous sexual encounters.
