What is Zomig?

Zomig tablets are an effective medication used to treat migraines. It is a brand name given to the generic drug zolmitriptan

Zomig can relieve both migraines with aura and migraines without aura. Zomig is available in tablet form or as a fast-acting nasal spray

How does Zomig work?

Zolmitriptan (the generic name for Zomig) belongs to the triptan group of drugs, which are selective serotonin receptor agonists. Zomig decreases the widening of blood vessels in the brain that is caused by a migraine.

Zomig works by stopping pain signals from being sent to the brain and preventing the release of natural substances that cause migraines.

How to take Zomig

Zomig tablets are best taken promptly at the first signs of a migraine, with or without food. You shouldn’t take Zomig at the aura stage (the warning signs that can come before a migraine headache). Instead, wait for headache pain to start before taking the medication. This is because Zomig is less effective when taken beforehand.

Zomig tablets should never be chewed, cut, or crushed. Some Zomig tablets are orodispersible, which means they disintegrate in the mouth allowing for them to be swallowed easily.

Read the information leaflet before you start to take Zomig tablets, and ask your pharmacist or doctor any questions that you might have beforehand.

Zomig tablets should be stored out of the reach of children, away from direct light, moisture and heat.

Zomig dosage instructions

Several factors will determine the Zomig dosage you are prescribed. These include:

  • Other medications that you are taking
  • Your response to treatment
  • Your age

You should always discuss the correct dosage with your pharmacist or doctor before taking Zomig tablets. Always make the medical professional who is prescribing you this medication aware of any prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, or herbal supplements that you are currently taking.

Zomig comes in 2.5mg tablets. They also come in 2.5mg and 5mg easy-to-swallow orodispersible tablets.

Zomig is also available as a nasal spray (Zomig nasal spray) which has a faster onset of action.

The initial adult dosage of Zomig is 2.5mg or 5mg to be taken at the onset of a migraine. A second dose can be taken after 2 hours, if a migraine recurs. Do not take a second tablet if the first dose has been unsuccessful in treating a migraine. The maximum single dose of Zomig tablets is 5mg, and no more than 10mg should be taken over a 24 hour period. Zomig is not recommended for children.

How long does Zomig take to work?

After taking a dose of Zomig, you can expect the medication to take effect within an hour.

Zomig can be taken at any time once a migraine has started, but it is best taken as soon as the migraine symptoms have started. Zomig may work quicker on an empty stomach, but it can also be taken with food.

If Zomig does not improve your symptoms, stop taking the medication until you have had a chance to speak to your pharmacist or doctor who might prescribe an alternative treatment.

Zomig and alcohol

The way Zomig works is not affected by drinking alcohol, but if you have a migraine or cluster headache, we advise that you should not drink.

Alcohol can sometimes trigger migraines and make existing migraine symptoms worse. Drinking alcohol also has the potential to accentuate common side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea.

Zomig and pregnancy

Research shows pregnant women who had been prescribed triptan drugs displayed no significant congenital defects. However, pregnant women should discuss this with their doctor before taking Zomig.

Zomig and breastfeeding

Studies have not determined any significant risk to infants. This is because Zomig levels in breastmilk are low, the amounts that are ingested by infants are small. However, it is recommended to not take Zomig whilst you are breastfeeding. If you do take Zomig, talk with your doctor before breastfeeding.

Zomig vs Imitrex

Imitrex is the US brand name for sumatriptan, which is available under the brand name Imigran in the UK. Imitrex is not available to buy in the UK.

Like Zomig, Imitrex is a migraine relief drug. Both medications are prescribed for migraines and cluster headaches.

Zomig and Imitrex are in the triptan class of drugs; selective serotonin receptor agonists that work similarly. They trigger the stimulation of serotonin receptors in the brain, and reverse the widening of blood vessels caused by a migraine, thereby relieving pain.

You can find both Zomig and Imitrex as tablets and nasal sprays. While Zomig is available in 2.5mg tablets, Imitrex tablets come in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg. There are no significant differences between Zomig and Imitrex, but people may find that one works better than the other for them.

Zomig vs sumatriptan

Sumatriptan is also sold under the brand name Imigran in the UK and Imitrex in the US.

Both Zomig and sumatriptan are classified as triptans and are prescribed for migraines and cluster headaches. Like Imitrex, they both work by stimulating serotonin receptors and reversing blood vessel widening to alleviate migraine pain.

Zomig and sumatriptan tablets are both available to buy through our online pharmacy. Both medications share many similarities, and it may just come down to personal preference when choosing which product is best suited.

To find out more about sumatriptan, take a look at what our customers have said on the sumatriptan tablets reviews page. We have also written a detailed guide that discusses sumatriptan side effects and everything else that you will need to know before taking this migraine treatment.

Zomig vs Maxalt

Maxalt is the brzand name for the migraine medication rizatriptan in the UK. Like Zomig, it is a medication used to treat migraines. Maxalt comes in 5mg and 10mg tablets.

Zomig and Maxalt work in similar ways; Zomig and Maxalt work to stimulate the brain’s serotonin receptors, contracting the blood vessels to counteract the widening caused by migraines, and reducing the pain in the process. They are both selective serotonin receptor agonists that belong to the triptan group of drugs.

You can buy Zomig and Maxalt for comparable prices through our online pharmacy. Both migraine treatments also share several potential side effects, like dizziness, nausea, mild headache, drowsiness, and a burning sensation.

A significant difference between Zomig and Maxalt is the time that the respective drugs take to work. Zomig can take up to an hour to relieve migraine symptoms, while Maxalt can be effective in just 30 minutes.

Dosages also differ – Maxalt is typically taken in 10mg tablets, rather than the Zomig doses of 2.5mg or 5mg.

Zomig side effects long term use

Zomig should be taken when required and does not have a daily dosing schedule. Research has shown that Zomig is well tolerated and effective in the treatment of migraine attacks over periods of up to 12 months.

Can I buy Zomig over the counter?

It is not possible to buy Zomig over the counter in the UK because it requires a prescription.

At Chemist Click, our online service allows you to buy Zomig at a competitive price. Before our clinicians can prescribe you with migraine treatment, you will need to fill out a short online questionnaire, which will determine your suitability for this product.
