What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a weekly weight loss injection that contains semaglutide, a medicine that helps control appetite and reduce hunger.

How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy works by replicating a natural hormone in your body called GLP-1, which helps to:

  • Reduce appetite: Wegovy acts on areas of the brain that control hunger and fullness, helping you feel satisfied with smaller portions.
  • Slow digestion: It delays how quickly food leaves your stomach, helping you stay fuller for longer.
  • Improve blood sugar control: By regulating insulin and glucose levels, less energy is stored as fat.

Who is eligible for Wegovy?

You may be eligible for Wegovy if you’re an adult with:

  • A BMI of 30 kg/m² or above
  • A BMI of 27 kg/m² or more and have a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea.

How long does Wegovy take to work?

Wegovy (semaglutide) starts working in your body soon after the first injection, but noticeable weight loss usually begins within a few weeks. Most people begin to see visible results after 4 to 8 weeks of consistent weekly use.

Prepare for the injection
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Find a clean, well-lit area to prepare your injection.
  • Check the pen label to make sure it is the correct strength and not expired.
  • Inspect the medicine through the pen window, it should be clear and colourless (not cloudy or with particles).
Choose your injection site
  • Wegovy is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) in your stomach (abdomen), thigh, or upper arm (if someone else gives the injection).
  • Rotate injection sites each week to avoid irritation.
  • Never inject into areas that are red, bruised, hard, scarred, or tender.
Remove the pen cap
  • Pull the pen cap straight off your pen
  • Take a needle and remove the outer cap. Do not throw it away as you will need it later.
  • Push the needle onto the pen and twist it until it is secured tightly on.
Inject your Wegovy dose
  • Push the pen firmly against your skin at a 90° angle and keep applying pressure.
  • You will know your injection has started when the yellow bar starts moving. If you do not see it moving, press the pen more firmly against your skin.
Starting the injection
  • The injection should take about 5-10 seconds.
  • Do not stop after 2 clicks. You will hear 2 clicks during the injection
  • Click 1: The injection has started
During the injection
  • Click 2: The injection is ongoing, not finished
Complete the injection
  • Do not remove the pen from your skin until the yellow bar stops moving and 10 seconds have passed. Then, lift the pen slowly away from your skin.
Disposal
  • Remove the needle and replace the pen cap.
  • Place the used needle in a sharps bin – never throw it in household waste.
After your injection
  • You can gently press a cotton pad over the site if needed – do not rub.
  • If you notice any redness or swelling, it should fade within a few hours.
  • Always contact your healthcare provider if you have concerns or experience unusual reactions.

How long do I need to use Wegovy for?

You can use Wegovy for as long as it continues to help you lose weight or maintain your weight loss.

Weight management is a long-term process, and many people stay on Wegovy for several months or even years to maintain results. Stopping treatment too soon can cause your appetite to return and weight to be regained.

How to use Wegovy

Use Wegovy once a week on the same day each week, with or without food.

Follow your prescriber’s dosing schedule, starting low and increasing gradually to minimise side effects. Combine it with a balanced diet and regular exercise for the best weight loss results.

Wegovy Side Effects

Like all medicines, Wegovy (semaglutide) can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Most are mild and improve as your body adjusts to treatment.

Most common side effects:

Side Effect Approximate % of Users Affected*
Nausea 44%
Diarrhoea 30%
Vomiting 24%
Constipation 24%
Abdominal / stomach pain / indigestion 20%
Headache 14%

* These are rounded average approximations across the available data for Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide)

When do side effects start?

Side effects often start within the first few days or weeks of starting Wegovy, especially as your body adjusts to the medicine.

They’re usually mild and tend to ease over time, particularly as the dose increases gradually.

Are the side effects permanent?

There are no long-term side effects associated with Wegovy to date.

Most people find that things like nausea or stomach disturbances settle down as your body gets used to the medicine. If anything keeps bothering you, we can adjust your dose or offer advice to make it more comfortable.

Wegovy Warnings

Do not take Wegovy if:

  • You are allergic to semaglutide or any ingredients in the injection.

Before you start using Wegovy, or at any point during your treatment, it is important to let your prescriber know if you have any of the following:

  • Kidney problems – side effects can cause dehydration (loss of fluids)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Diabetes
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) – increased risk if you’re taking sulfonylurea or insulin with wegovy
  • Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy)
  • Gout
  • Low blood pressure
  • Enlarged prostate

Wegovy Whilst Pregnant & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy

  • Do not use Wegovy if you’re pregnant or trying to conceive.
  • Semaglutide has a long half-life; you should stop at least 2 months before planning a pregnancy to allow the medicine to clear from your system.
  • If you become pregnant while using Wegovy, stop the injections and speak to your doctor immediately.

Breastfeeding

  • Avoid Wegovy while breastfeeding. It is unclear how much semaglutide passes into human milk, so the potential risk to the infant is unknown.

Wegovy Interactions

Wegovy may interact with certain medications, so always let your prescriber know about all medicines and supplements you’re taking – including prescriptions, over-the-counter products, and vitamins. This helps ensure Wegovy is safe and suitable for you.

Common interactions include:

  • Insulin or other diabetes medications
  • Oral medications (like birth control, painkillers, antibiotics)
  • Other GLP-1 receptor agonists
  • Warfarin or other blood thinners
  • Medications for heartburn or acid reflux

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Wegovy is generally considered safe when used under medical supervision. Like any medication, it can cause side effects, most commonly nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation, but serious complications are rare.

When you order Wegovy for the first time through Chemist Click, you’ll start by completing a short online consultation about your health and weight loss goals.

One of our UK-registered prescribers will review your answers to make sure Wegovy is safe and suitable for you.

Once approved, your treatment will be discreetly packaged and delivered straight to your door, with clear instructions and ongoing support from our pharmacy team if you need it.

Yes, you can drink alcohol while using Wegovy, but it’s best to do so in moderation.

Alcohol can sometimes make side effects like nausea or dizziness worse, and it may affect your blood sugar levels, especially if you have diabetes. If you do choose to drink, try to avoid doing so on an empty stomach and listen to how your body responds.

Yes, Wegovy has been shown to support heart health in certain people.

Studies have found that it can reduce the risk of serious heart problems like heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death in adults who are overweight or obese and have existing heart disease.

This benefit is likely linked to the way Wegovy helps with weight loss, blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar control.

If you have a history of heart problems, it’s worth discussing this with your doctor to see how Wegovy might fit into your overall care plan.

Wegovy and Mounjaro are both weekly injections that help with weight loss, but they work slightly differently. Wegovy contains semaglutide, which mimics one natural hormone (GLP-1), while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, which targets two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), often leading to greater weight loss for some people.

If you’re switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy through Chemist Click, you’ll need to complete a short online consultation so our prescribers can review your current dose, how you’ve tolerated Mounjaro, and your treatment goals. They’ll advise you on the safest way to transition, usually by starting Wegovy at the lowest dose to help your body adjust and reduce side effects.

Yes, Wegovy should normally be stored in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C. However, once you start using it, it can be safely kept at room temperature for up to 6 weeks, so there’s no need to worry if you’re out and about. Just make sure it stays away from heat and direct sunlight.

Yes, Wegovy is available on the NHS for those with a BMI of over 40 (or over 37.5 if you are from a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean ethnic background); along with a diagnosis of four or more of the following health conditions:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Sleep apnoea
  • High cholesterol

You can take Wegovy for as long as your prescriber feels it’s helping you safely. Many people stay on it long-term to maintain weight loss, but our healthcare team will regularly review your progress, side effects, and overall health to decide if continuing treatment is appropriate.

Your appetite may gradually increase and you might feel less full after meals, which can make it easier to regain weight. That’s why it’s important to continue healthy eating habits and regular exercise, and to discuss with your prescriber any plans to stop so they can support you and monitor your progress.

Your body may need time to adjust as the medication gradually reduces appetite.

Hunger can also increase if you’re not eating enough protein or fibre, skipping meals, or not sleeping well. If your hunger persists, speak to your prescriber — your dose may need adjusting, or you may benefit from dietary and lifestyle tweaks to support better results.

The most serious side effects of Wegovy are rare but can include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), gallbladder problems, severe allergic reactions, or changes in heart rate. It’s important to seek immediate medical help if you experience severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or sudden swelling or rash.

Tiredness can affect some users.

This is usually due to a lower calorie intake and changes in blood sugar levels. Tiredness usually improves as your body adapts.

Take it as soon as you remember within 5 days of your scheduled injection. Then, continue with your usual weekly dosing day.

If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your regular day.
