What is Regaine?
Regaine is a hair product that contains the active ingredient minoxidil. It is used by men between the ages of 18-49, who are experiencing hair thinning around the scalp region. Regaine works by increasing the blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating them to regrow hair, as well as prevent further hair loss. It is available to buy without a prescription from most high street and online pharmacies. Regaine should be used twice daily, and takes around 8 weeks to work. It is effective in around 80% of those that try it.
How does Regaine work?
Regaine works by increasing the flow of blood to vessels in the scalp. In turn, there is an increased blood supply to the hair follicles, giving them access to a rich supply of oxygen and nutrients. This stimulates the hair follicles to produce thick and long hair which is visible.
How long does it take for Regaine to work?
It takes around 2 months of consistent use before you will notice the effects of Regaine. If you have been experiencing hair shedding after the first few weeks of using Regaine, continue to use it. This is a sign that Regaine is working, as your old hairs need to shed in order to make way for newer, healthier hairs. From around 3-4 months, you should notice that hairs are appearing to look thicker and your hair has a fuller effect. Whilst this is the general consensus, everyone has a different rate of hair growth and it may take slightly longer before you see results. If you have not seen any improvement after 6 months, you should stop using Regaine.
Does Regaine work?
A study conducted over a one-year period buy doctors found that balding regions had become smaller in 62% of subjects. Regaine was found to be “very effective” in 16% of men, “effective” in 48% of men and “moderately effective” in 21% of men in stimulating hair growth.
Another study conducted over a four-month period, found that the balding region had got smaller in 67% of men. It was reported as “very effective” in 8% of men, “effective” in 55% of men and “moderately effective” in 31% of men in stimulating new hair growth. Doctors found that hair density (fullness) was improved in 74% of men.

Regaine has a successful track record, and is one of the only hair growth products available on the market.
You are likely to experience better results from Regaine:
- The younger you are.
- If you are experiencing hair loss at the top of your scalp.
- If you start using treatment at the first signs of hair loss.
The best way to measure results, is to take before and after pictures and monthly intervals.
Regaine ingredients
Active ingredient: Minoxidil 50mg
Inactive ingredients: Ethanol anhydrous, water (purified), butylated hydroxytoluene (E321), lactic acid, citric acid anhydrous, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, glycerol, polysorbate 60, propane, isobutane, butane.
Whilst the active ingredient will remain the same, the inactive ingredients may differ amongst brands. You should read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication, for a full list of ingredients.
Regaine Dosage Instructions
- Wash your hands before use.
- Apply a capful’s worth of foam on your hands.
- Massage the foam lightly on to the affected areas of your scalp.
- Do this twice daily, leaving a 12 hour gap before doses.
- Wash your hands after use.
Regaine Side Effects
Very common (affecting more than 10% of users):
- Headache
Common (affecting up to 10% of users):
- Itching or dermatitis
- Reports of unwanted non-scalp hair growth. Always ensure thorough handwashing after application, and if the foam accidentally touches areas other than the scalp, rinse the area with water
Uncommon (affecting up to 1% of users):

- Change in the texture of hair
Other effects with unknown frequency:
- Depressed or low mood
- Eye irritation
- Vomiting
- Scalp irritation, including but not limited to redness, dryness, and skin flaking

- Temporary loss of hair may occur within the first two months of use. This is likely due to a change in the growth cycle and should not last beyond a couple of weeks. If hair loss persists beyond 2 weeks, stop treatment and speak to your doctor

Regaine Warnings
Do not use this medication if:
- You are female.
- You are under 18.
- You have experienced an adverse reaction to minoxidil or any other ingredients.
- Your hair loss is a result of drug treatment.
- You are completely bald, you are experiencing patchy or hair loss, or if you are experiencing hair loss on other areas of your body.
- The cause of your hair loss is unknown, sudden, or unexpected.
- You have untreated high blood pressure.
- You have any scalp condition, including sunburn and psoriasis.
- You have a shaven scalp.
- You have any dressing or bandage on your scalp.
Regaine Interactions
Regaine may interact with the following medications. You should not use Regaine if you are using any of the following:
- Applications for scalp conditions, such as Dithranol (for psoriasis), Tretinoin (for skin conditions), topical steroids.
- Medication that lowers your blood pressure
Frequently Asked Questions
Regaine can be applied after you use products on your hair. You should ensure that the hair products you use do not contain petrolatum (a common ingredient in hair wax and gel).
The active ingredient is exactly the same in both Regaine foam and solution. The benefit of the solution is that it allows you to measure the exact amount (1ml) accurately, whereas the foam application relies on you to estimate the correct amount. However, the foam is easier to apply and many men have reported that it looks less greasy.
Regaine and Rogaine both contain the same active ingredient, minoxidil 5%. Rogaine is the name of the medication that is sold in the USA, whilst Regaine is the name in the UK. There is no difference and they are exactly the same product with a different name.
During the first few weeks after starting Regaine, you may experience an increase in hair shedding. This is normal and a good sign, signalling that your new growth cycle is ready to begin. The older hairs are shedding to make way for newer, healthier hairs and with time, you should experience thicker and fuller hair growth.
You should continue to use Regaine for as long as you wish to see results. The natural balding process will continue after you stop using Regaine.
You should give it 6 months before deciding whether or not Regaine is working. If you are not experiencing any visible results after 6 months, you should discontinue treatment. Another alternative treatment for male pattern baldness is finasteride. You should discuss with a doctor or pharmacist whether this treatment option is suitable for you.
