GLP-1 tablets are weight loss treatments taken orally, rather than by injection.
There are currently two oral GLP-1 tablets which are licensed for weight loss; orfoglipron and Wegovy tablets.
Both are designed to help reduce appetite and support weight loss, but they are not the same drug.
GLP-1 tablets are attracting interest due to the convenience of taking a tablet orally, rather that injecting. This particularly suits those that are anxious about injecting.
GLP-1 tablets work by copying pathways linked to the natural GLP-1 hormone.
In simple terms, they help you feel less hungry and fuller after meals. GLP-1 tablets often make it easier to eat less without feeling as preoccupied by food.
They can also slow stomach emptying, which means food leaves the stomach more gradually.
That is one reason people often feel fuller for longer, but it is also one reason these medicines can cause stomach-related side effects, especially when first starting or increasing the dose.
GLP-1 tablets are taken once daily.
However, there is an important differentiating factor between orforglipron and Wegovy tablets.
Wegovy tablets need to be taken once daily on an empty stomach in the morning with water only, and you must then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other oral medicines.
Orforglipron is more flexible. It is taken once daily with or without food, which may make it easier for some people to fit into everyday life.
Both treatments are introduced gradually and increased step by step depending on response and tolerability. Wegovy tablets are escalated from 1.5mg to 25mg, while orforglipron tablets are increased from 0.8mg to 17.2mg.
GLP-1 tablets and injections work in a similar way, but the main difference is how they are taken. Tablets may suit people who want to avoid injections, while injections may suit people who prefer once-weekly treatment and a simpler routine.
| Feature | GLP-1 tablets | GLP-1 injections |
| How they are taken | Orally | Injected |
| Dosing schedule | Once daily | Once weekly |
| Examples | Orforglipron, Wegovy tablets | Mounjaro, Wegovy injections |
| Food restrictions | Can be more restrictive depending on the product. Wegovy tablets need careful timing around food and drink, while orforglipron is more flexible | Usually fewer restrictions around meals |
| Weight loss potential | ~16% of starting weight | ~22% of starting weight |
| Appetite suppression | Can reduce hunger and help you feel fuller | Can reduce hunger and help you feel fuller |
| Side effects | Similar to injections, mainly nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion | Mainly nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion |
| Dose escalation | Usually started low and increased gradually to improve tolerability | Also usually started low and increased gradually |
| Best suited to | People who want to avoid injections and prefer tablets | People who want less frequent dosing and are comfortable with injections |
| UK availability | Not currently licensed in the UK for weight loss as a tablet category. UK timing for Wegovy tablets and orforglipron is expected in late 2026 | Several GLP-1 and related injections are already available in the UK, depending on indication and prescribing pathway |
| Main downside | Daily dosing and, for some products, stricter instructions on how to take them | Needles put some people off |
Neither option is automatically “better” for everyone. The right choice depends on convenience, side effect tolerance, clinical suitability, and how well the medicine fits into your routine.
There is no single “best” GLP-1 tablet for everyone. The best option depends on what matters most to the patient, such as convenience, how well they tolerate side effects, how much weight loss they are hoping for, and whether they would prefer a tablet that can be taken more flexibly.
Whilst there is no head-to-head trial comparing orforglipron and Wegovy tablets, orforglipron has demonstrated weight loss potential of 12.4% whilst Wegovy tablets have demonstrated weight loss potential of 16.6% on average.
Yes, GLP-1 tablets look very promising for weight loss. In clinical trials, Wegovy tablets have shown average weight loss of up to 16.6%, while orforglipron has shown average weight loss of up to 12.4% at higher doses.
As with injectable GLP-1 medicines, results depend on the product, the dose, how long treatment is continued, and how well the medicine is tolerated.
The most common side effects of GLP-1 tablets are usually:
These are usually most noticeable when starting treatment or increasing the dose.
In clinical trials, around 8% of people taking orforglipron stopped treatment due to side effects, compared with 6.8% for Wegovy tablets. In both cases, stomach-related side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were the main reason people stopped treatment.
For the right patient, prescribed through the correct route, GLP-1 tablets can be appropriate and effective treatments. However, they are still prescription medicines and are not suitable for everyone. Both Wegovy tablets and orforglipron carry warnings around important risks and require clinical screening before prescribing.
As with other GLP-1 medicines, they are generally not suitable for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and caution is needed in people with certain gastrointestinal issues, pancreatitis concerns, gallbladder disease, or other relevant medical conditions.
At the moment, if you are in the UK and specifically looking for Wegovy tablets or orforglipron for weight loss, they are not yet licensed UK weight loss options.
UK pharmacies will not be presenting them as standard licensed weight loss medicines for UK supply at this time.
Once they are approved in the UK, they would be expected to be available through regulated clinics and registered pharmacies, subject to the relevant licensing, prescribing criteria and supply arrangements.
Until then, patients should be cautious about websites claiming to sell these products cheaply or without proper checks.
There is no confirmed UK launch date yet for Wegovy tablets or orforglipron. What we do know is that orforglipron and Wegovy tablets are FDA approved in the US.
We expect the UK to follow suit, and it is likely that a licensed GLP-1 tablet for weight loss will be available towards the end of 2026, however, no official date has been confirmed.
In the U.S, GLP-1 tablets cost around $150 – $200.
In the UK, we can expect this to be slightly lower, however, there have not been any official announcements from manufacturers.
Around 12-16% on average.
Meaningful weight loss is usually noticed after 2-3 months of consistent use.
You should start to notice a reduction in appetite within the first month. As the dose increases, so does appetite suppression.
Most people do best with smaller meals, slower eating, good hydration, and lighter foods if they feel sick. Greasy, very large or heavy meals can worsen nausea for some people.
It is likely; however, this can take some time. Even after licensing, NHS access would depend on guidance, indications, local pathways and, in many cases, broader health-system decisions rather than approval alone.
Side effects are often most noticeable when you start treatment or increase the dose. For many people they improve as the body adjusts lasting one week after the dose increases.
Better results are achieved from higher doses. Starting on a lower dose helps your body build tolerance, especially to stomach-related side effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Starting on the highest dose straight away would be much harder for many people to tolerate.
Yes, but in moderation. Alcohol can intensify side effects, especially stomach related side effects. Alcohol can also hinder weight loss results.
