What are Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets are an oral form of semaglutide designed to support weight loss. They contain the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections, but are taken by mouth instead of injected.

They are taken once daily and work by reducing appetite, increasing feelings of fullness and helping you eat fewer calories over time.

This makes them a potential needle-free alternative for people who want the benefits of semaglutide weight loss treatment without using injections.

How do Wegovy tablets work?

Wegovy tablets contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist.

They work by:

  • Reducing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness
  • Slowing stomach emptying, helping you stay satisfied for longer
  • Lowering cravings and caloric intake
  • Improving blood-sugar control and insulin sensitivity

An oral (tablet) form delivers semaglutide through the digestive system using absorption-enhancing technology so that enough medication enters the bloodstream to produce the same appetite-regulating effects as weight loss injections.

Wegovy tablets results

Key findings from late-stage studies (e.g., OASIS trials):

  • In the OASIS 4 trial, Wegovy tablets produced average weight loss of 13.6% using the treatment-policy estimate, and 16.6% in people who stayed on treatment, over 64 weeks
  • A third of participants lost 20% or more of their starting weight, within the same trial
  • A substantial proportion of patients achieved between 10-15% weight loss, levels associated with meaningful health benefits.
  • Appetite reduction and improved portion control were observed early, with progressive weight loss over time.

Are Wegovy tablets safe?

Wegovy tablets contain oral semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections. Clinical trials suggest they have a safety profile broadly similar to injectable Wegovy, with the most common side effects being nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea.

Most digestive side effects were mild to moderate and improved over time, but Wegovy tablets are not suitable for everyone and should only be used after a clinical assessment.

Side effects of Wegovy tablets

The most common side effects are digestive symptoms, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Very common side effects affect at least 1 in 10 people. Common side effects affect between 1 in 100 and 1 in 10 people.

Frequency Side effect How to manage symptoms
Very common Nausea Eat smaller meals, avoid greasy or rich foods, eat slowly, and stop eating when full. Symptoms often improve as your body adjusts.
Very common Diarrhoea Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Avoid very fatty foods, alcohol and large meals. Seek advice if diarrhoea is severe or persistent.
Very common Vomiting Take small sips of water regularly. Avoid large meals and seek medical advice if vomiting continues or you cannot keep fluids down.
Very common Constipation Increase fluids, fibre and gentle movement. Consider speaking to a pharmacist about a suitable constipation remedy if needed.
Very common Stomach pain or abdominal discomfort Eat smaller portions and avoid heavy, spicy or high-fat meals. Seek urgent advice if pain is severe, persistent or spreads to the back.
Very common Headache Stay hydrated and eat regularly where possible. Speak to a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if needed.
Very common Fatigue Rest where needed, keep hydrated and avoid skipping meals completely. Symptoms may improve after the dose settles.
Common Indigestion or dyspepsia Eat smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and reduce spicy, acidic or fatty foods.
Common Acid reflux or heartburn Avoid late meals, large portions, alcohol and trigger foods. Raising the head of the bed may help night-time reflux.
Common Bloating or abdominal distension Eat slowly, avoid fizzy drinks, and reduce large or heavy meals. Gentle walking may help.
Common Burping Avoid carbonated drinks, chewing gum and eating too quickly. Smaller meals may reduce symptoms.
Common Wind or flatulence Reduce fizzy drinks and very large meals. Some people benefit from identifying and reducing trigger foods.
Common Dizziness Keep hydrated and avoid standing up too quickly. Seek advice if dizziness is persistent, severe or linked to fainting.
Common Low blood sugar Mainly relevant for people with type 2 diabetes using insulin or sulfonylureas. Monitor blood glucose and speak to your prescriber, as diabetes medicine may need adjusting.
Common Gastroenteritis Keep hydrated and rest. Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, or there are signs of dehydration.
Common Cold-like symptoms Rest, fluids and simple pharmacy remedies may help. Seek advice if symptoms worsen or do not settle.
Common Hair loss This can occur during significant weight loss. Ensure adequate protein and micronutrient intake and seek advice if hair loss is severe or persistent.
Common Gallstones Seek medical advice if you develop upper right abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Wegovy tablet warnings

Wegovy tablets are not suitable for:

  • Individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2
  • An allergy to semaglutide

Caution should be taken in people with:

  • Severe gastrointestinal disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • A history of diabetic retinopathy
  • A history of mental health concerns
  • An upcoming surgery where sedation is going to be used

Wegovy tablet interactions

Potential interactions are expected to mirror injectable semaglutide:

  • Diabetes medications (e.g., insulin, sulfonylureas) may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Medications requiring rapid absorption may be affected because GLP-1 medicines slow gastric emptying.

Wegovy tablets when pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Oral Wegovy tablets are not recommended in pregnancy. Weight-loss medicines should be stopped if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
  • Oral Wegovy tablets are not recommended while breastfeeding. There is insufficient safety data regarding exposure to infants.

Yes. Wegovy tablets are a form of oral semaglutide.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy, and the tablet version is designed to be taken by mouth rather than injected. It works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, helping reduce appetite, increase fullness and support weight loss.

No. Wegovy tablets and Rybelsus both contain oral semaglutide, but they are not the same treatment.

Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss, and is available in lower doses.

Wegovy tablets are higher-dose oral semaglutide tablets developed specifically for weight management in countries where they are approved.

Wegovy tablets contain oral semaglutide, while orforglipron is a different oral GLP-1 tablet being developed by Eli Lilly.

Both are tablets designed to support weight loss, but they contain different active ingredients.

Wegovy tablets appear to offer weight loss results broadly comparable with standard Wegovy 2.4mg injections, although they have not been directly compared in a head-to-head UK trial.

In the OASIS 4 trial, Wegovy tablets produced average weight loss of 16.6% in people who stayed on treatment. However, higher-dose Wegovy injections may produce greater average weight loss in some patients.

In the OASIS 4 trial, people taking Wegovy tablets lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight when they stayed on treatment.

Around one in three people lost 20% or more of their body weight. Individual results can vary depending on dose, diet, activity levels, side effects, treatment adherence and starting weight.
