GLP-1 tablets are oral medicines that activate the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor.

GLP-1 is a naturally occurring hormone released after eating. It plays a role in appetite, fullness, digestion and blood glucose regulation.

Yes. There are currently two GLP-1 tablets licensed for weight management in the UK: Wegovy tablets and Foundayo.

Wegovy tablets were authorised by the MHRA on 11 June 2026, becoming the first GLP-1 tablet approved for weight management in the UK.

Foundayo, containing orforglipron, was authorised on 10 August 2026, making it the second oral GLP-1 treatment licensed for weight management in the UK.

Both are prescription-only medicines and require a clinical assessment before they can be prescribed.

The two GLP-1 tablets currently licensed for weight management in the UK are:

Wegovy tablets

Wegovy contains semaglutide. Semaglutide is also available as a once-weekly Wegovy injection, but the tablets and injections have different doses and administration instructions.

Foundayo

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a non-peptide, small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist developed by Eli Lilly.

It is taken once daily and does not require fasting or meal timing.

What about Rybelsus?

Rybelsus also contains oral semaglutide, but it is a type 2 diabetes medicine and is not licensed for weight management in the UK.

Are Mounjaro tablets available?

No. Mounjaro contains tirzepatide and is currently administered by injection. There is no licensed Mounjaro tablet.

Are Ozempic tablets available?

No. Ozempic is an injectable semaglutide medicine licensed for type 2 diabetes. It should not be confused with oral semaglutide products.

GLP-1 tablets activate GLP-1 receptors in the body.

One of their main effects for weight management is on areas of the brain involved in controlling appetite.

This can:

Reduce hunger
You may feel less hungry between meals.

Increase fullness
You may feel satisfied after eating a smaller amount.

Reduce food cravings
GLP-1 signalling can reduce the desire to eat and make it easier to maintain a lower calorie intake.

Influence digestion
GLP-1 receptor agonists can delay gastric emptying, particularly when treatment is started.

These effects can help create the sustained reduction in calorie intake needed for weight loss.

GLP-1 tablets are licensed to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity rather than as a replacement for lifestyle changes.

Both licensed GLP-1 tablets have demonstrated clinically significant weight loss in phase 3 clinical trials.

Wegovy tablet results

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking oral semaglutide 25 mg lost an average of 13.6% of their starting body weight after 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% with placebo.
In the same analysis:

• 76.3% lost at least 5% of their weight
• 59.8% lost at least 10%
• 47.0% lost at least 15%
• 27.5% lost at least 20%

Foundayo results

In the ATTAIN-1 trial, people taking the highest studied orforglipron dose lost an average of 12.4% of their starting body weight after 72 weeks, compared with 0.9% with placebo.
At the highest dose:

• 77.1% lost at least 5%
• 59.6% lost at least 10%
• 39.6% lost at least 15%
• 20.1% lost at least 20%

Does Wegovy work better than Foundayo?

Trial results suggest both medicines can produce substantial weight loss, but they have not been directly compared in a head-to-head clinical trial.

Wegovy’s main oral weight-management trial and Foundayo’s ATTAIN-1 trial involved different participants, ran for different lengths of time and used different study designs.

It is therefore more accurate to compare their individual evidence rather than conclude that one medicine is definitively more effective than the other.

For many patients, the most noticeable difference is how the tablets have to be taken.

Wegovy tablets

Wegovy tablets should be:

• Taken once daily.
• Taken after fasting for at least 8 hours.
• Swallowed whole with a small amount of water – up to 120 ml.
• Followed by at least another 30 minutes without food, drink or other oral medicines.

Taking Wegovy too close to food, drinks or other tablets can reduce the amount of semaglutide your body absorbs.

Foundayo

Foundayo should be taken once daily, but it can be taken:

• at any time of day
• with or without food
• without fasting
• without restrictions around drinking water

The tablet should be swallowed whole and should not be broken, crushed or chewed.

For someone who regularly takes several medicines first thing in the morning or finds fasting difficult, this difference may be important when a prescriber considers the most appropriate option.

Foundayo dosage

Foundayo starts at 0.8 mg once daily.

The available dose steps are:

There should be at least 30 days at the current dose before a further increase.

Not everyone will necessarily require the highest dose. Treatment response, side effects, other medicines and clinical circumstances all need to be considered.

The most common side effects of GLP-1 tablets affect the digestive system.

These include:

• nausea
• diarrhoea
• constipation
• vomiting
• indigestion
• abdominal discomfort or pain

Side effects are often most noticeable when treatment is first started or when the dose is increased.

Starting at a low dose and increasing gradually helps improve tolerability.

Serious side effects

GLP-1 receptor agonists can also cause less common but potentially serious problems.

Seek medical advice urgently if you experience persistent, severe abdominal pain, particularly if it spreads towards your back, as this can be a symptom of acute pancreatitis.

Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea can also cause dehydration and may affect kidney function.

There is no single GLP-1 tablet that is best for everyone.

Wegovy tablets and Foundayo are both licensed for weight management in eligible UK adults.

Wegovy contains semaglutide and has shown average weight loss of 13.6% at 64 weeks in its main oral weight-management trial.

Foundayo contains orforglipron and showed average weight loss of 12.4% at 72 weeks at the highest dose in ATTAIN-1.

However, those results came from separate trials and should not be interpreted as a direct comparison.

A major practical advantage of Foundayo is that it can be taken without fasting or food restrictions. Wegovy tablets require a specific fasting routine for reliable absorption.

The most appropriate medicine depends on factors including:

For the right patient, prescribed through the correct route, GLP-1 tablets can be appropriate and effective treatments. However, they are still prescription medicines and are not suitable for everyone. Both Wegovy tablets and orforglipron carry warnings around important risks and require clinical screening before prescribing.

As with other GLP-1 medicines, they are generally not suitable for people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and caution is needed in people with certain gastrointestinal issues, pancreatitis concerns, gallbladder disease, or other relevant medical conditions.
