What are reusable face masks?
Our reusable face masks are cotton lines and come with three PM2.5 filters, which can be placed into a sleeve on the inside of the mask to provide additional protection. The filters are replaceable allowing you to wash the mask and reuse it. The masks come with or without a valve. The purpose of the valve is to allow exhaled air to pass out of the mask.
How do they work?
Reusable face masks can be machine washed and reused. They contain small a pocket on the inside of the mask, which allows you to insert a PM2.5 filter for added protection. These filters protect against particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres. The filter is also removable and can be replaced.
How to use a washable face mask
Washable face masks cover the mouth and nose area. They have two adjustable straps that are placed over the ears, keeping the mask securely in place. These straps can be adjusted to allow a secure fit. They also come with a malleable nose strip with sits along the bridge of the nose and can be adjusted to a tight fit around the face. To wear the mask, hold it against your face so that it covers your mouth and nose. Secure the ear loops one at a time and mould the nose piece over the bridge of your nose. The ear loops can be tightened or loosened depending on the size of your face. These masks can be washed and reused (ensure to remove the filter and replace it once the mask has been washed and dried). We recommend washing your mask and replacing the filter regularly to lower risk of contamination.
Should I use a reusable mask with a valve filter or without?
The purpose of the valve filter on the mask is to allow you to breathe easier. It allows air to be expelled, reducing stuffiness. However, a mask with a valve may pose as a health risk to those around you, if you have a virus or infection. For this reason, we recommend using a mask without a valve where possible. In some cases, where a person has breathing difficulties, it may be better to use a mask with a valve. If your glasses steam up, it may also be a good idea to wear a face mask with a valve filter.
What is a PM2.5 filter?
PM2.5 means particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of less than 2.5micromeres. PM refers to a mixture of particles in the air that we inhale daily. PM2.5 filters reduce the likeliness of inhaling small particles in the air, however, it is important to note that these are fashion masks, and not medical grade. These masks are almost too effective. With the filter in place I have difficulty breathing when moving about but I feel more confident wearing one if I have to go indoors. Unfortunately I have not been able to prevent my glasses from misting up even after adjusting the mask.
