What is Finasteride used for?

Finasteride 1mg is a prescription treatment used daily to manage male pattern hair loss, also known and androgenetic alopecia. It will not help to treat hair loss caused by stress, diet, medication, medical conditions or hormonal changes.

It is also sold under the brand name Propecia (Finasteride is often referred to as generic Propecia).

How does Finasteride work?

Finasteride works by lowering levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles. This helps slow hair loss and can promote regrowth and thicker, healthier hair in most men.

How effective is Finasteride?

Finasteride 1mg is one of the most effective licensed treatments for male pattern hair loss. Clinical studies show that around 83% of men taking finasteride maintained or increased their hair count over 2 years, compared with 28% of men taking placebo.

Finasteride is most effective at slowing or stopping further hair loss. Some men may also notice visible regrowth, especially around the crown and mid-scalp. Results are gradual and usually require daily treatment for at least 3 to 6 months, with fuller results often seen after 6 to 12 months.

Continued use is needed to maintain the benefit. If finasteride is stopped, DHT levels rise again and hair loss usually returns gradually.

How long does Finasteride take to work?

Finasteride usually takes 3 to 6 months to show early results, such as reduced shedding and the first signs of regrowth.

After 6 to 12 months, you should notice stronger, more visible improvements, including thicker and fuller hair.

To keep these results, you must continue taking Finasteride regularly; stopping treatment will gradually reverse the benefits and hair loss may return.

Finasteride results timeline

Time on finasteride What you may notice
First 1–3 months You may not see much visible change. Some men notice reduced shedding, but this stage is mainly about allowing the medicine to start reducing DHT levels.
3–6 months Early results may become noticeable. Hair loss may slow down, shedding may reduce, and some men may start to see small improvements in thickness. NHS and BNF guidance state that improvement is usually expected after around 3 to 6 months.
6–12 months Results are usually more visible. Hair may look thicker, fuller or more stable, especially around the crown and mid-scalp.
12 months and beyond This is when many men see their best results. Continued daily use is usually needed to maintain the benefit.
After stopping finasteride Any benefit is gradually lost. Hair loss may return within 6 to 12 months after treatment is stopped.

Who is Finasteride suitable for?

Finasteride is used for male pattern hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia. This usually causes thinning at the crown, a receding hairline, or both. It is not suitable for every type of hair loss.

Hair loss caused by stress, illness, nutritional deficiency, medication, scalp disease or sudden shedding may need a different assessment or treatment.

Our clinicians check that your hair loss pattern is suitable for finasteride before prescribing.

Finasteride Dosage

Take one tablet daily to treat hair loss.

Finasteride tablets are an oral treatment and should be swallowed whole. Do not crush or break pills.

They can be taken with or without food. Take at roughly the same time each day to maintain steady levels in the body.

Do not take more than 1mg daily. This will not improve results and can result in side effects. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take your next tablet at the usual time.

Finasteride Side Effects

Common side effects

Most Finasteride side effects are mild and often improve with continued use or disappear if treatment is stopped. The most commonly reported side effects in men include:

  • Reduced sex drive (low libido)
  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection (erectile dysfunction)
  • Ejaculation problems, such as reduced semen volume
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement (gynecomastia)
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Testicular discomfort
  • Temporary increase in hair shedding at the start of treatment (a normal response that often signals the medication is beginning to work)

Serious side effects

Although uncommon, some Finasteride side effects can be serious and require prompt medical attention. These may include:

  • Mental health changes: Low mood, depression, and in rare cases, suicidal thoughts.
  • Allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; or widespread hives.
  • Breast changes: Any lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or noticeable changes in breast tissue, which could indicate a rare risk of male breast cancer.

If any of these symptoms appear, stop taking Finasteride and seek urgent medical advice.

Finasteride shedding

Some men may notice temporary increased shedding during the first few months of treatment. This can happen as weaker hairs shed and the hair cycle adjusts. It does not happen to everyone, and it should usually settle. If shedding is severe, prolonged, or concerning, speak to a clinician.

Finasteride Warnings

Finasteride is not suitable for everyone. Do not take Finasteride if you:

  • Are allergic to any of its ingredients
  • Are female or were assigned female at birth
  • Are under 18 years of age

Important safety information about finasteride

The MHRA has highlighted that finasteride may be associated with sexual and mood-related side effects.

Sexual side effects can include reduced libido, erectile dysfunction and changes to ejaculation.

Mood changes, depression and suicidal thoughts have also been reported. Patients with a history of depression or suicidal thoughts should tell their prescriber before starting finasteride.

If depression or suicidal thoughts develop while taking finasteride 1mg for hair loss, stop taking the medicine and seek medical advice. Some sexual side effects may continue after stopping treatment.

Finasteride can also affect PSA blood test results, so patients should tell their doctor they are taking finasteride before having a PSA test.

Finasteride and Pregnancy

Pregnant women should not handle Finasteride tablets, particularly if they are broken or crushed. Finasteride can affect the sexual development of an unborn baby.

Use a condom if your partner is pregnant or thinks she may be pregnant.

If you are planning to have a baby, stop taking Finasteride tablets for at least three months before trying to conceive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Finasteride is effective for many men. Studies show it can significantly slow or stop hair loss and, in some cases, promote regrowth.

Yes, Finasteride is generally safe for most men when taken as prescribed and has a well-established safety profile backed by decades of clinical use. However, like any medication, it can cause side effects, some of which may be serious and, in rare cases, may continue even after stopping treatment.

No, you cannot get Finasteride on the NHS for hair loss. It is only available to buy from private clinics or online pharmacies.

Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) refers to a set of persistent sexual, psychological, and neurological symptoms that some individuals report after stopping Finasteride. While most people find their side effects resolve once the medication is discontinued, reported PFS symptoms can include low libido, erectile dysfunction, depression, anxiety, brain fog, and other cognitive or physical changes. If you experience any concerning symptoms, stop the medication and seek medical advice.

To reduce Finasteride side effects, speak with a healthcare professional about adjusting your dose or considering alternative treatments. Supporting your overall health through lifestyle changes may also help ease symptoms.

No, most finasteride side effects are reversible and usually improve with continued use or resolve after stopping the medication. While rare reports of persistent symptoms exist (known as post-finasteride syndrome), most people find that any sexual side effects lessen over time and disappear once the drug is discontinued.

Yes, Finasteride can temporarily raise testosterone levels because it blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT (the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles). This increase is generally mild and not usually enough to cause health issues. Long-term studies show that testosterone levels typically return to normal with continued use.

No, Finasteride is not required after a hair transplant, but most surgeons strongly recommend it to maintain your existing hair and protect your long-term results. A transplant restores hair in thinning areas, but it does not stop ongoing hair loss in the surrounding, non-transplanted areas.

Yes, DHT levels will increase and start to shrink hair follicles.

No, Finasteride 5mg is not licensed to treat hair loss. It should only be used to treat an enlarged prostate. Taking 5mg of Finasteride will not yield better results and can increase the chances of serious side effects. Finasteride 1mg is a lower dose that has been shown to have the same effect on hair loss as Finasteride 5mg.

No, it is not licensed to treat hair loss in women.

Yes, but finasteride is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. You must complete an online consultation so a clinician can check whether it is suitable before it can be supplied.

The NHS states that finasteride is prescription-only and, for hair loss, is only available privately rather than on the NHS.

After struggling with hair thining for a while, I decided to try Finasteride 1mg, and I’m so glad I did. Within a few months, I noticed less hair shedding and even some regrowth around my crown. My hair is fuller, and I feel much so more confident. It took time, but the results are definitely worth it. No major side effects for me just a slight adjustment in the beginning. If you're dealing with hair loss, it’s definitely worth it!
