What are FFP2 Face Masks?

FFP2 masks, also known as N95 masks, are a type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), normally used to protect the user from harmful particles in the air. They are designed to achieve a close and secure fit to the face. They provide a high level of protection by preventing contaminated and harmful airborne particles from entering your body through the mouth and nose.

FFP2 mask protection level

FFP2 masks have a filtration rate of up to 95%, and usually have three layers of protection. These masks are resistant to fluids and are commonly used by those working in healthcare settings, as they are filtering masks offering a high level of protection.

How do FFP2 face masks work?

FFP2 masks are constructed of a network of tangled fibres, which are designed to trap tiny particles. This prevents harmful substances from travelling through the mask, protecting the nose and mouth.

The shape of the mask is designed in line with the ergonomics of your face, to ensure a secure fit. This allows maximum breathing capability and comfort while still providing protection from harmful substances in the air.

FAQs

Yes, an FFP2 mask can help reduce the risk of inhaling airborne particles that may contain hantavirus, especially when cleaning areas contaminated with rodent urine, droppings or nesting material.

However, it is not a complete guarantee of protection. Fit is crucial. The mask needs to seal properly around the nose, mouth and chin, and it should be worn alongside other precautions.

FFP2 masks should usually be replaced after use, especially if they become damp, contaminated, damaged or difficult to breathe through. They should not be shared with other people.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and disposal.

FFP2 masks may be suitable for people who want a higher level of respiratory protection, including:

  • Healthcare workers
  • Carers
  • Commuters
  • Travellers
  • People in busy indoor settings
  • Those at higher risk from respiratory infections
  • Workers exposed to dust or airborne particles

If you have breathing difficulties, a heart or lung condition, or are unsure whether an FFP2 mask is suitable for you, speak to a healthcare professional before use.

Most FFP2 masks are designed for single use unless the manufacturer specifically states they are reusable. Replace the mask if it becomes damp, damaged, dirty or difficult to breathe through.

This depends on the mask and setting. In general, an FFP2 mask should be replaced if it becomes damp, uncomfortable, contaminated or damaged.

Yes. FFP2 masks need a close fit around the nose, mouth and chin to work properly. Gaps around the face can reduce protection.

The masks fit very well (I was worried about this as others I'd bought elsewhere were too big) and are comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I have now bought more.
