What is tadalafil?

Tadalafil is a medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).  It belongs to the class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. It has the same active ingredient as Cialis, but it is the generic (non-branded) version. It is often referred to as "generic Cialis". Tadalafil is available as two different variations.

Tadalafil 2.5mg & tadalafil 5mg - known as tadalafil daily
Tadalafil 10mg & tadalafil 20mg - known as tadalafil 36-hour

How does it work?

Tadalafil works by encouraging blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. This helps to achieve and maintain an erection.

Important note: Tadalafil will only work where there is sexual stimulation. It will not help to increase sexual desire.

How long does tadalafil last?

Tadalafil is available in two different variations:

Tadalafil 20mg and 10mg (when required dose)

These strengths are known as the “when required dose”, as they are taken 30 minutes before sexual activity. They have a window of action of up to 36 hours. This allows users to benefit from multiple sexual encounters within the 36-hour timeframe that the drug is effective for.

Tadalafil 5mg and 2.5mg (daily dose)

These strengths are known as the “daily dose”, as they are taken every day. Tadalafil 5mg and 2.5mg have a continuous window of action, allowing users to benefit from spontaneous sexual activity, without the need for scheduling doses. The effects last for as long as the tablets are taken.

How long does tadalafil take to work?

Tadalafil 20mg and 10mg (when required dose)

Tadalafil 20mg and 10mg take around 30 minutes to start working. Food does not usually affect the absorption of the tablets.

Tadalafil 5mg and 2.5mg (daily dose)

It can take around 5 days of consistent use to see the benefits of tadalafil daily, which are continuous.

Tadalafil dosage instructions

Tadalafil 2.5mg tablets (daily dose)

Tadalafil 2.5mg is the starting dose for those wishing to take tadalafil daily. You should take one tablet daily.

The chances of experiencing side effects are lower with the 2.5mg strength. If you have not been successful after 8 separate attempts, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist about increasing the strength to tadalafil 5mg tablets.

Tadalafil 5mg tablets (daily dose)

Tadalafil 5mg is the higher strength daily tablet, usually prescribed for those who have not experienced the desired effects with the 2.5mg tablets. You should take one tablet daily.

Your doctor or pharmacist may wish to start you off using the 5mg tablets. This can depend on factors such as your BMI and age.

Tadalafil 10mg tablets (when required dose)

Tadalafil 10mg is the starting dose for those wishing to take tadalafil on a “when required” basis. You should take one tablet 30 minutes before sexual activity.

The chances of experiencing side effects are lower with the 10mg strength, in comparison with 20mg. You should only look to increase the dose if you have been unsuccessful after 8 separate attempts. If the 10mg tablets are working well for you, a dose increase is not necessary. This will increase the chances of experiencing side effects, and there are no proven benefits that an erection will be of a better quality if you increase the dose without the need to.

Tadalafil 20mg tablets (when required dose)

Tadalafil 20mg tablets are the next step up from 10mg. You should take one tablets 30 minutes before sexual activity.

Your doctor or pharmacist may prescribe you with the 20mg strength if you have had limited success with the 10mg tablets. If you have tried the 20mg strength on 8 separate occasions with limited success, you may wish to try an alternative ED tablet.

Tadalafil alternatives

Tadalafil vs Sildenafil - What is the difference?

Both treatments are oral medication used to effectively treat erectile dysfunction. In comparison, sildenafil takes longer to work, and the effects generally last up to four hours.

Tadalafil, on the other hand, has a quicker onset of action and a longer duration of action. The side effects of these two medicines are generally similar, with the main difference that sets them both apart is the speed at which they work and the length of time they last.

Unlike tadalafil, sildenafil cannot be taken with food, and it is advised that you take the medication on an empty stomach. Not doing so can delay the onset of action and reduce the amount of drug that is available in the blood stream.

Many people opt for tadalafil over sildenafil because of its quicker onset of action. However, because it has been established for longer, it has been suggested that there is a wider knowledge of the side effects and positive effects that sildenafil has in comparison to tadalafil.

For more information on the differences between the two, take a look at our guide ‘Sildenafil vs Tadalafil’.

Tadalafil is available on the NHS if you have certain medical conditions such as diabetes. The limit is 4 tablets per month.

Tadalafil is licensed to treat ED in males. Women can only use tadalafil if it is prescribed by a specialist to treat high blood pressure in the lungs.

For more information, visit our article: Can women take tadalafil?.

Drinking alcohol when using tadalafil is not advised, as it can exacerbate side effects such as dizziness, headaches, and a drop in blood pressure. Alcohol is also a contributing factor to ED and can affect your ability to achieve and maintain an erection. However, small amounts of alcohol may be consumed safely.

Tadalafil can lower blood pressure and you should not use it if you have low blood pressure. If you are taking medication to treat high blood pressure, tadalafil may cause your blood pressure to drop to a dangerously low level. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if there is an interaction.

Tadalafil is available over the counter in the 10mg strength.

Both treatments are effective and clinically proven to help treat ED. They have similar success rates.

Both tadalafil and Viagra are erectile dysfunction tablets. They are amongst two of the most popular treatments for ED. The side effects of these two medicines are similar, including nausea, stuffy nose, and dizziness.

Tadalafil appears to be more popular amongst men in recent times. It has a quicker onset of action, longer lasting effect, and a milder side-effect profile, which makes it a more sought-after treatment. It is also available as a daily tablet for men looking for a continuous solution to ED, something that sildenafil (Viagra) does not offer.

However, many men are happy with sildenafil, finding that it works well for them. Sildenafil is cheaper than tadalafil, making it a preferred option for some.

Both tadalafil and sildenafil have been on the market for several years and they are both effective erectile dysfunction treatments. No two individuals are the same and what you find works best for you, may not necessarily be the case for others. Therefore, it is important to find what works best for you.

If you’re interested in researching Viagra in a bit more detail, take a look at our ‘How Viagra Works’ guide.

After ejaculation, it is likely that your penis will return to its flaccid state. After ejaculating, sexual stimulation normally decreases. Sexual excitement is still required for tadalafil to work; therefore, it is unlikely that an erection will be maintained after ejaculation.

You cannot take tadalafil and sildenafil together, or on the same day. You should not take more than one ED tablet on the same day.

According to UK national prescribing guidelines, you should try taking tadalafil on 8 separate occasions. If you are still not having success, you should see your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Tadalafil is safe and well tolerated; however, it is not recommended for those with certain medical conditions, or those taking certain medication which may cause an interaction. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if it is safe for you to take.

Tadalafil can also be used to treat an enlarged prostate, or pulmonary hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). We are only able to prescribe tadalafil for erectile dysfunction.

Here at Chemist Click, we can delivery tadalafil the next day in the UK. You will need to complete a short online consultation, so that we can asses whether tadalafil is safe for you to take.

Take one tablet with a glass of water. If you are taking the 10mg or 20mg tablets, take one tablet 30 minutes before sexual activity. Food does not usually affect the absorption of the tablet, and neither does moderate amount of alcohol. However, excess alcohol can negatively impact erections.

If you are taking the 2.5mg or 5mg daily dose tablets, take one tablet around the same time each day. The time of day does not impact the effectiveness of treatment.

The maximum dose of tadalafil is 20mg within 24 hours. This should be as a single dose, and not in divided doses. If you have limited success with a lower dose, do not take more to make up 20mg. If you have been advised by your doctor or pharmacist to increase your dose to tadalafil 20mg, wait till the following day if you have already taken a tablet.
