What is Viagra Connect?

Viagra Connect is an over-the-counter medication used as an erectile dysfunction treatment. It is one of the more popular ED treatments available, as you do not require a prescription to buy it. Viagra Connect contains the active ingredient sildenafil and is no different to the more commonly known Viagra. The Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency reclassified Viagra Connect from a “Prescription Only Medication”, to a “Pharmacy” medication  in 2017. This decision was made to increase awareness of ED, and to encourage men to seek help. The high costs and barriers associated with obtaining a prescription for erectile dysfunction medication has resulted in many men purchasing counterfeit medication online. How does Viagra Connect work?

Viagra Connect works by allowing the blood vessels in the penis to relax, so that blood can enter upon sexual stimulation. This allows men to maintain a firm erection when they are sexually excited. It will not help you to last longer or increase sexual desire. If you do not have ED, Viagra Connect is unlikely to benefit you.

How long does Viagra Connect last?

The effects of Viagra Connect can last for up to 4 hours. This does not mean that you will have an erection lasting 4 hours, but you will be able to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused within this timeframe. Factors that can affect the time frame for which Viagra is active can include body weight, state of mind and how recently a meal was consumed before taking a tablet.

How long does Viagra Connect take to work?

Viagra Connect takes around 60 minutes to work.

You should take the tablets on an empty stomach, as food reduces the absorption of treatment.

Take one tablet around 1 hour before sexual activity.

Active ingredient: Sildenafil citrate

Inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, magnesium stearate, calcium hydrogen phosphate (anhydrous), hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E 171), triacetin and indigo carmine aluminum lake (E132)

Like all medication Viagra Connect can cause side effects. Side effects include:

Very common – affecting more than 10% of men

• Headache

Common – affecting up to 10% of men

• Nausea
• Indigestion
• Nasal congestion
• Visual disturbances such as colour tinge to vision, blurred vision

Uncommon – affecting up to 1% of men

• Stomach issues such as vomiting, pain, heartburn
• Skin rash
• Fatigue
• Rapid heartbeat
• High or low blood pressure
• Muscle ache
• Dizziness
• Ringing in the ears
• Blood in urine

Rare – affecting up to 0.1% of men

• Dry nose and nasal swelling
• Fainting
• Irritability
• Sudden loss of hearing
• Chest pain
• Irregular heartbeat
• Blood in semen

If you experience any of the following symptoms, seek urgent medical assistance:

• Chest pain
• An erection lasting longer than 4 hours
• Decrease or loss of vision/hearing
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as wheeziness, difficulty breathing, swelling of the eyelids, lips, nose, face or throat
• Peeling or swelling of the skin, blistering of the mouth, genitals, and eyes (these symptoms may be accompanied by a fever)
• Seizures

You should not use Viagra Connect if you:

• Do not have ED
• Have angina which is being treated with medication
• Have a severe heart condition
• Have a severe liver condition
• Have low blood pressure
• Have ever had visual impairment resulting from nerve damage, or you have a history or family history of retinosa pigmentosa
• Have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Viagra Connect

You should let your doctor or pharmacist know if you have any health conditions, so that they can assess the suitability of treatment.

Viagra Connect interacts with several drugs. Most of the time, it is safe to use treatment.

You should not take Viagra Connect if you take:

• Nitrates – used to treat angina. Example include nicorandil, isosorbide mononitrate, glyceryl trinitrate
• Poppers
• Riociguat – used to treat high blood pressure in the lungs
• HIV medication – such as ritonavir

You should speak to your doctor if you take:

• Antifungals and antibiotics such as ketoconazole and erythromycin
• Indigestion remedies such as cimetidine
• Other ED treatments
• Alpha blockers such as doxazosin, tamsulosin and alfuzosin

It may still be possible to take Viagra Connect, but your GP or pharmacist may need to make dose adjustments. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medication you are taking.

• Sildenafil – Sildenafil and Viagra Connect both contain the same active ingredient. However, sildenafil is a non-branded version, and a most cost effective solution to ED. It is also available in a higher strength.
• Tadalafil – Takes 30 minutes to work, and lasts for up to 36 hours. It is also available as a daily dose tablet, known as tadalafil daily. It has a continuous window of action, allowing for spontaneous sexual activity.
• Vardenafil – Takes 25 minutes to work, and lasts for up to 5 hours. It is often a recommended treatment option for diabetics.
• Spedra – It is the fastest acting ED tablet, taking 15 minutes to work. It lasts for up to 4 hours.

Viagra Connect vs Viagra – What is the difference?

• The active ingredient is the same, sildenafil citrate
• Viagra Connect is available to buy over the counter, but a prescription is require for Viagra
• Viagra Connect is only available in the 50mg dose, whilst Viagra offers three different doses; 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
