About Cialis

Key points

  • Available as 10mg and 20mg strengths which are effective within 30 minutes and last for up to 36 hours.
  • Available as 2.5mg and 5mg strengths which are taken every day and have a continuous window of action. This allows users to enjoy the benefit of spontaneous sex, without the need to schedule doses before sex.
  • Cialis has a high success rate

What is Cialis?

Cialis is a drug that is used for erectile dysfunction. The active ingredient in Cialis is tadalafil and it belongs to the class of drugs known as the PDE-5 inhibitors. This is the same class of drugs as Viagra (sildenafil), except Cialis has a longer duration of action than Viagra.

Cialis is available as two different options:
Cialis 2.5mg & 5mg - known as Cialis Daily
Cialis 10mg & 20mg - known as Cialis 36 hour or "The weekend pill"

How does Cialis work?

Cialis increases blood flow to the penis during sexual arousal. This allows for a firmer and longer lasting erection.

Important note: Cialis will only work during periods of sexual arousal. It does not increase sexual desire, nor does it delay ejaculation.

How long does Cialis last?

Cialis is available in two different strengths, which last for different periods of time:

Cialis 20mg and 10mg (when required dose)

These strengths are known as the “when required dose”, as they are consumed 30 minutes before sex. The effects can last for up to 36 hours, providing users with the opportunity to engage in multiple sexual encounters during this window.

Cialis 5mg and 2.5mg (daily dose)

These strengths are referred to as the “daily dose”, as one tablet is taken daily. Cialis 5mg and 2.5mg have a continuous effect, allowing users to enjoy unplanned sexual activity, without the need to take a tablet beforehand. The effects do not wear off, providing you take one tablet every day.

How long does it take Cialis to work?

Cialis 20mg and 10mg (when required dose)

Cialis 20mg and 10mg work within 30 minutes. Food does not reduce the absorption of the tablets.

Cialis 5mg and 2.5mg (daily dose)

It takes approximately 5 days of consistent use to notice the benefits of Cialis daily.

Cialis dosage instructions

The dose of Cialis will depend on whether you wish to take the “when required” dose, or the “daily dose”.

Cialis 2.5mg tablets (daily dose)

The initial dose for individuals opting for daily Cialis is 2.5mg. The starting dose is to take one tablet daily.

The likelihood of encountering side effects is reduced with the 2.5mg strength. If you haven't achieved the desired results after eight separate attempts, consult with your doctor or pharmacist regarding the possibility of transitioning to Cialis 5mg tablets.

Cialis 5mg tablets (daily dose)

Cialis 5mg is the higher strength daily tablet, generally prescribed for those who have not achieved the intended results with the 2.5mg tablets. You should take one tablet daily.

Your doctor or pharmacist may suggest that you start with Cialis 5mg. This can depend on factors such as your BMI and age.

Cialis 10mg tablets (when required dose)

The initial dose for individuals opting for Cialis on an "as-needed" basis is Cialis 10mg. You should take one tablet 30 minutes before sexual activity. The likelihood of encountering side effects is lower with the 10mg strength compared to the 20mg. Consider increasing the dose only if you have not achieved the desired results after eight separate attempts. If the 10mg tablets are effective, there is no need for a dose increase. Such an increase may elevate the risk of side effects, and there is no evidence to prove that increasing the dose improves erection quality.

Cialis 20mg tablets (when required dose)

Cialis 20mg tablets are the next step up from 10mg. You should take one tablets 30 minutes before sexual activity.

If your experiences with the 10mg tablets have been less than satisfactory, your doctor or pharmacist may recommend the 20mg strength. If you have limited success even after eight separate attempts with the 20mg strength, consider exploring alternative options for erectile dysfunction treatment.

Both treatments have different characteristics and effect different individuals in different ways. They have both been proven to be effective treatments in several men. Cialis appears to be more appealing due to its faster onset of action (can be 15-20 minutes as opposed to 30-60 minutes for Viagra), it's longer duration of action (36 hours or continuous effect as opposed to up to 4 hours for Viagra) and it's lower side-effect profile. However, many find that Viagra works fine for them and are happy with it. It depends on you as an individual and what your needs are and more importantly, which treatment works best for you.

  • Keep a clear head and try to feel relaxed
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Take your medication as prescribed

Cialis should not be used by women. It works by promoting blood flow to the penis and will not be effective for females. It can cause harmful side effects.

Cialis is a brand name, which contains the active ingredient, Tadalafil. Whilst the appearance of the tablet may differ, they are medically the same and contain the same ingredient, therefore having the same effect. Before manufacturers of generic medication are allowed to introduce their drugs to the market, they must be able to demonstrate that the generic form is bioequivalent (pharmaceutically the same as) its branded counterpart and meet the same strict manufacturing standards.

Cialis is available over the counter from most pharmacies. It is only available in the 10mg strength, under the brand name, Cialis Together. You will need to have a consultation with a pharmacist beforehand.

Cialis is a prescription only medication. You will be required to have a consultation with a doctor or pharmacist, before being prescribed Cialis.

At Chemist Click, you can buy Cialis online by completing a short online consultation. We use discreet packaging, and your treatment will be with you the next day.

Cialis is only available on the NHS if you have certain medication conditions such as diabetes or cancer. The limit is 4 tablets a month.

Cialis can be taken long term, and it unlikely to cause any long-term side effects or damage to your health. Your doctor or pharmacist will ask you a series of questions about your current health before each supply.

You cannot take Cialis and Viagra together. You should only take one ED medication per day.

Moderate alcohol consumption whilst taking Cialis is not likely to cause any interactions or cause any health risks. However, excessive consumption may lead to a drop in blood pressure, resulting in headache, dizziness, fainting or palpitations.
Excessive alcohol consumption can also affect the amount of blood that is available to your penis, therefore making erectile dysfunction worse.

  • Do not exceed the stated dose
  • Stay hydrated
  • Start with the lowest dose

It is possible to take two Cialis tablets together, providing that the dose does not exceed 20mg.

Cialis can help men to maintain an erection for longer, if they usually have difficulty keeping a firm erection. It will not make you last longer in bed if you have premature ejaculation, or ejaculate quicker than you would like.

If taken correctly, Cialis should not have any serious or life-threatening effects and is safe to take. It is important to answer our medical questionnaire as truthfully and accurately as you can to minimise any health risks.

It is important try Cialis a few times in order properly assess whether you need to increase the dose or try another treatment. Try taking it a full hour before sexual activity. Although Cialis can be taken shortly after a meal, try waiting at least two hours before you take it. Cialis will only work where there is sexual excitement. Keep in mind that without arousal, Cialis will not work. Try to keep a clear head and relax. If you find that Cialis is still not providing you with the desired outcome, try increasing the dose. If you have already tried taking the maximum dose on several separate attempts, it may be worth speaking to your GP or calling our helpline.
