What is Fluticasone nasal spray?

Fluticasone nasal spray is a steroid nasal spray which helps to reduce symptoms associated with hay fever (allergic) rhinitis and hay fever. It can also be used in the treatment of nasal polyps. It is a steroid nasal spray which works by reducing inflammation and irritation in the nose. This helps to ease and control symptoms such as:

• Sneezing
• Nasal congestion
• Itchy or runny nose

Fluticasone nasal spray is available as two options:

• Fluticasone furoate 27.5mcg (generic Avamys)
• Fluticasone propionate (generic Flixonase)

How long does fluticasone nasal spray take to work?

You should start to feel better 8-12 hours after the first dose. It can take up to 2 weeks of regular use to feel the full effect of treatment.

Use two sprays into each nostril daily.

Once symptoms are under control, reduce the frequency to one spray into each nostril daily.

Active ingredient: Fluticasone furoate or fluticasone propionate

Inactive ingredients: Carmellose sodium, cellulose microcrystalline, dispersible cellulose, glucose, polysorbate 80, disodium edetate phenylethyl alcohol, benzalkonium chloride and purified water.

Like all medications, fluticasone nasal spray can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Side effects of fluticasone nasal spray include:

Very common: Affecting more than 10% of users

• Nosebleeds

Common: Affecting up to 10% of users:

• Headache
• Unpleasant taste
• Unpleasant smell

Uncommon: Affecting up to 1% of users:

• Burning, irritation or pain in the nose

Seek urgent medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms:

• Breathing difficulty
• Swelling of the nose, throat, eyes, tongue, or face
• Severe skin reaction
• Visual disturbances

Do not use fluticasone nasal spray if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients
• You have tuberculosis
• You have an infection in your nose
• You have trauma to your nose (from an injury or surgery)

Fluticasone nasal spray can be used during pregnancy.

If you wish to use fluticasone whilst pregnant, you should check with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand.

Fluticasone nasal spray is usually safe to use when breastfeeding, as very small amounts of the drug enter the blood stream. However, always check with your doctor or pharmacist, if you with to use treatment whilst breastfeeding.

Fluticasone is safe to take with most medication. However, you should let your doctor or pharmacist know if you are taking any medication, especially if you are using:

• Other steroid tablets, creams, injections, or sprays
• Asthma treatment
• HIV treatment such as cobicistat or ritonavir
• Antifungals such as ketoconazole

Fluticasone nasal spray is the generic, non-branded version of Avamys and Flixonase. It works in exactly the same way, and the treatment outcomes are identical.
