What is Allevia?

Allevia is a hay fever tablet which contains the ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride. It helps to control symptoms such as:

• Sneezing
• Itchy, runny or a blocked nose
• Itchy and watery eyes
• Itchy skin

Allevia works by blocking the release of histamine, a chemical produced by the body in response to an allergen, such as pollen or dust.
 

How long does Allevia take to work?

It takes one hour for Allevia tablets to work, but the full effect may not be seen until a few a days of consistent use.

The effects last for up to 24 hours.

Take one tablet daily with water, before a meal.

Important note: The maximum dose is one tablet daily. You should not exceed the stated dose.

Can you get Allevia 180mg?

Allevia is only available as 120mg tablets.

Active ingredient: Fexofenadine hydrochloride

Inactive ingredients: Pregelatinized maize starch, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, povidone K30, colloidal anhydrous silica, macrogol 400, titanium dioxide (E171), red iron oxide (E172) and yellow, iron oxide (E172).
 

Can I take these tablets if I am lactose intolerant?

Allevia tablets do not contain lactose and are safe to take if you are lactose intolerant.

Like all medication, side effects are possible, although not everyone gets them. Allevia side effects include:

Common: Affecting up to 10% of users:

• Headache
• Drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Nausea

Uncommon: Affecting up to 1% of users:

• Fatigue

Seek medical assistance if you experience:

• Swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue
• Difficulty breathing

You should always report side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.

Does Allevia make you drowsy?

Allevia is a non-drowsy antihistamine. However, around 10% of users will be affected by drowsiness.

Do not take Allevia if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you want to take Allevia and:

• You have kidney or liver problems
• You have heart disease
• You are elderly

Do not take Allevia if you are pregnant, unless advised by your doctor.

Most of the time, Allevia is safe to take whilst breastfeeding. However, you should always check with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand.

Allevia can interact with the following medicines:

• Some anticancer medicines (such as tepotinib, apalutamide, vemurafenib)
• Heartburn medication which contains magnesium and aluminum
• Some antidepressants – such as phenelzine, isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine
• Some medication used to treat an irregular heartbeat – such as dronedarone
• Some antivirals – such as pribentasvir, velpatasvir
• Some antifungals – such as ketoconazole
• Some antibiotics – such as rifampicin, erythromycin
• Some medication used to treat arthritis – such as filgotinib, leflunomide
• Teriflunomide – used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis
• Letermovir – used in stem cell transplants

Allevia vs fexofenadine

• Both contain the same ingredient, fexofenadine hydrochloride
• There may be differences in the non-active ingredients
• This is the case for other brands of OTC fexofenadine such as Allegra and Treathay
