What is levocetirizine?
Levocetirizine is an antihistamine which helps to alleviate symptoms of hay fever (allergic rhinitis) and allergies. It works by blocking the release of histamine, which is the chemical released when the body comes into contact with an allergen. Histamine causes the body to react by causing symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes and nasal congestion. By blocking its action, levocetirizine can reduce these symptoms.
It takes around one hour for levocetirizine to work. However, it may take a few days of consistent use to experience the full effect of treatment.
Levocetirizine is the generic version of the branded medication, Xyzal.

Levocetirizine is used to treat symptoms of hay fever and allergies such as:
- Sneezing
- Nasal congestion
- Itchy nose
- Itchy and watery eyes
- Itchy skin

Active ingredients: Levocetirizine dihydrochloride 5mg
Inactive ingredients: Lactose monohydrate, colloidal anhydrous silica, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, macrogol 400, hypromellose (E464), titanium dioxide (E171).

Like all medication, there is the possibility of side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Side effects of levocetirizine are:
Common: Affecting up to 10% of users
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
Uncommon: Affecting up to 1% of users:
- Stomach pain
- Extreme tiredness

- Signs of allergy including swelling of the lips, face, mouth, throat, or eyes
- Difficulty breathing

Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride Warnings
Do not use levocetirizine if:
- You are allergic to levocetirizine or to other antihistamines (such as Cetirizine hydroxyzine) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine, which can be found in the patient information leaflet
- You suffer from severe kidney failure
- You have a rare inherited blood disorder (porphyria)
- You suffer from epilepsy
You may still be able to use levocetirizine, but you should check with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand. If you are taking any medication, you should also check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride Interactions
Levocetirizine interacts with:
- Isocarboxazid
- Phenelzine
- Tranylcypromine
- Betahistine
You should not use levocetirizine if you are taking any of the medication listed above.
Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride and Pregnancy/Breastfeeding
You should not use levocetirizine if you are pregnant, unless your doctor has advised you to. Although there is no information to suggest that it will harm the baby, there is lack of information surrounding this.
Small amounts of levocetirizine are present in breastmilk. The amounts are not though to be harmful to the baby. However, you should avoid using levocetirizine if you are breastfeeding, unless your doctor has advised you to use treatment.

If you take more than you should, you may experience the following symptoms: confusion, diarrhoea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, feeling unwell, dilation of the pupils, itching, restlessness, drowsiness, sleepiness, fast heartbeat, shaking, and difficulty passing urine.
