What is Avamys nasal spray and what is it used for?
Avamys nasal spray is a prescription-only treatment for hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and allergies, such as house dust and animal fur.
Avamys is used to treat symptoms such as:

Avamys spray typically begins to work eight hours after the first dose.

How to use Avamys nasal spray
For Avamys nasal spray to be effective, it is important that you use it regularly and follow the instructions provided.
When using a new bottle, you may have to push down the spray a few times until you see a fine mist released. This may also be necessary if you haven’t used a bottle for a few days.
You can find instructions on how to use Avamys nasal spray in the patient information leaflet. Here is what you need to do:
- Shake the bottle and remove the cap
- Blow your nose to clear your nostrils
- Use your finger to close one nostril and then tilt your head forward as you put the nozzle into the open nostril
- Breathe slowly through the nose and press down on the nozzle, spraying once into the nostril
- Breathe out via your mouth
- Repeat the process in the other nostril
- Wipe the nozzle down with a tissue when you are finished, before replacing the cap
Do not exceed the recommended number of sprays in 24 hours.

Fluticasone nasal spray
Fluticasone nasal spray is the generic version of Avamys. It contains the same active ingredient as Avamys. Both treatments are as effective as each other.
Nasonex
Like Avamys, Nasonex is a nasal spray that can be used to treat symptoms of hay fever allergies, reducing inflammation.
Nasonex is also a steroid treatment and contains a similar type of active ingredient — mometasone furoate. Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid that works in the same way as fluticasone furoate, the active ingredient in Avamys, to combat allergy symptoms and inflammation. Avamys is not commonly used to treat nasal polyps, however, Nasonex is.
Nasonex spray is a prescription-only treatment.
Flixonase
Flixonase can be used to treat the same allergies that Avamys does.
It is another medicine in the corticosteroid group, but contains fluticasone propionate as its active ingredient, rather than fluticasone furoate.
Flixonase nasal spray works in the same way as Avamys, reducing inflammation to combat congestion in the nose, relieving symptoms such as nasal congestion, as well as watery, red or itchy eyes.
Beconase
Beconase nasal spray is another prescription-only treatment used to prevent and relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Like Avamys, Beconase is a corticosteroid medicine that works by reducing inflammation and easing congestion. It contains the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate.
How to use Avamys Nasal Spray
Hold the spray upright and pointing away from you then press the button firmly all the way in. Do this a few times until it releases a fine spray of mist into the air
Blow your nose to clear your nostrils
Tilt your head forward slightly and place the nozzle into one of your nostrils
Press the button firmly all the way in, while breathing into your nose. Once you are done, take the nozzle out and breathe out through your mouth
Wipe the nozzle with a clean, dry tissue. Do not use water when doing this
Wipe inside the cap with a clean, dry tissue as well. Never use water to clean your spray.
Avamys Dosage Instructions
The usual dose for Avamys nasal spray for hay fever and allergic rhinitis is, “two sprays into each nostril daily, reduced to one spray into each nostril daily, once control has been achieved”. The aim is to control symptoms to a point where you are using the lowest effective dose.
Each spray delivers a 27.5mcg dose.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Avamys is a steroid nasal spray, so overuse may cause adverse side effects and potentially damage the nostrils. Using more than the prescribed dose will not yield better results and can be harmful to your health.

- Medication used to treat HIV, such as ritonavir or cobicistat
- Ketoconazole (usually used to treat fungal infections)
