What is Nasonex?

Nasonex is a steroid nasal spray used to treat the symptoms of hay fever and allergies.

Symptoms of hay fever and allergies include congestion, a runny and itchy nose, sneezing, and watery or red eyes.

Nasonex nasal spray is prescription-only medicine, which means you need to be prescribed it by a doctor or pharmacist to buy it.

What is Nasonex used for?

Nasonex nasal spray is used to prevent and treat symptoms of hay fever and allergy, such as:

  • A runny nose
  • A blocked nose
  • Itching
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion

Nasonex can also be used to treat nasal polyps — soft growths in the nose. These aren’t usually serious, but can continue to grow and may block your nose if left untreated. Steroid sprays like Nasonex helps to shrink nasal polyps.

How does Nasonex work?

Nasonex contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate, a steroid.

When the treatment is sprayed into the nasal passage, mometasone furoate is released and absorbed by cells in the nasal passage. This prevents these cells from releasing the chemicals that normally trigger inflammation and allergy reactions.

By blocking this reaction, Nasonex reduces irritation and swelling, which relieves other symptoms such as sneezing, itchiness or a blocked nose.

How to use Nasonex

Nasonex nasal spray is very simple to use. You can follow these instructions on how to use Nasonex:

  • Before using the spray, blow your nose gently to remove any mucus and clear your airways
  • Using your finger, close one of your nostrils and tilt your head forward
  • Put the nozzle inside the open nostril, and as you breathe in slowly, press on the nozzle and spray into the nostril once
  • Breathe out through your mouth

You can repeat the same process for spraying into your other nostril.

You can also find full instructions on how to use Nasonex in the patient information leaflet enclosed with your treatment.

Nasonex alternatives

Nasonex vs Mometasone

  • Both contain the same active ingredient
  • Both have the same success rate
  • Mometasone nasal spray is a cheaper alternative to Nasonex

Nasonex vs Avamys

  • Both are nasal corticosteroids
  • The active ingredient is different
  • One is not necessarily better than the other, but some people may prefer one spray over the other
  • Avamys nasal spray is more expensive

nasonex nasal spray

Use Nasonex exactly as you have been instructed by your GP or pharmacist.

Nasonex needs to be ‘primed’ before using it for the first time or after a few days of the spray not being used.

To prepare Nasonex:

  • Gently shake the bottle
  • Place your index and middle finger on either side of the collar of the bottle and your thumb on the bottom of the bottle
  • While facing the nozzle away from you, press down on the pump a few times until a fine mist is released to “prime” the pump
  • If you have not used your Nasonex for more than 10 days, you will need to re-prime the bottle

It is important to clean your Nasonex regularly to ensure it stays working properly

To clean Nasonex:

  • Take off the dust cap and gently pull on the nozzle to remove it
  • Use warm water to wash the nozzle and dust cap, then rinse them off under a running tap
  • Shake off any excess water and leave the dust cap and nozzle to dry in a warm place
  • Replace both the nozzle and the dust cap
  • Prime the spray again each time after cleaning it
