What is an STI test kit?

STI test kits provide a convenient way to test yourself at home for a range of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Various STI home test kits can be ordered through our online pharmacy and sent straight to your door for rapid testing.

What do STI tests test for?

STI test kits provide tests for various STIs. At Chemist Click, you can buy a chlamydia test kit, chlamydia and gonorrhoea test kit, and herpes test kit

You can also find self-testing kits for other STIs (listed below) at a range of pharmacies:

Why do I need an STI test kit?

Some STIs cause symptoms, which serve as an indicator that you may be carrying an infection. However, in many cases, sexually transmitted infections do not cause any symptoms. Therefore, it could be a good time to test yourself for an STI if:

  • You have had unprotected sex
  • The condom broke during sex
  • You have had sex with a person who has an STI
  • You notice symptoms of an STI or any changes in your body
  • You have a new sex partner
  • You or your sex partner has multiple sex partners, and have not been tested in the last few months

Why should I get tested?

Many of the UK population are unaware that they are carrying an STI. Undiagnosed STIs may cause problems later on in life such as arthritis and infertility. The sooner you know, the quicker you can get treated, reducing the likelihood of complications further on down the line. It also reduces the risk of you infecting your sexual partners unknowingly.

How does an STI test work?

STI tests can be taken in person at your local sexual health clinic, hospital, or GP surgery. Alternatively, you can order a test kit online and test yourself at home.

Home testing kits for STIs are sent directly to your given address in discreet packaging, with an accompanying instruction leaflet. You then provide a sample – which will vary depending on the STI being tested for – that you then send to an NHS-accredited laboratory using a prepaid envelope.

You can receive your results confidentially via your preferred communication method; be that a text message, email, or phone call.

  • A chlamydia test kit: requires you to provide a urine sample to send to the laboratory. Results will be ready in two to three days.
  • A chlamydia and gonorrhoea test kit: requires you to provide a urine sample to send to the laboratory. Results will be ready in two to three days.
  • A herpes test kit: requires you to swab the blisters before sending the sample to the laboratory. Results are ready in three to five working days.

Can you do an STI test on your period?

Yes, you can do an STI test on your period, as menstrual blood does not usually alter the result. Regardless of where you are in your menstrual cycle, you can use an STI test kit.

How long after sex should I take an STI test?

As some infections will not show up straight after sex, you might need to wait to take an STI test, in order for results to be accurate.

It is recommended that you wait two weeks after sex to take a chlamydia and gonorrhoea test. A herpes test can be taken as soon as an outbreak occurs; usually from two to 12 days, or after 12 days if an outbreak hasn’t occurred.

If you experience STI symptoms, don’t wait to get tested. You should stop any sexual activity until you can get tested and receive a diagnosis.

How to do a home STI test?

There are a few important basic steps you need to take when doing a home STI test. We cover how to do a home STI test below:

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea test kits come with a urine sample bottle, and a specimen collection bottle.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water
  2. Complete the paperwork associated with a home STI test. If it hasn’t already been filled out, complete the request form which will come enclosed with your kit
  3. Fill in the required information on your sample label. In the case of a chlamydia and gonorrhoea test kit, this will be a label on a sticker that can be stuck onto the tube for your sample when completed
  4. Open the box, being careful not to damage its plastic lining
  5. Pass urine into the box until it is half full. You can then finish in the toilet
  6. Unscrew the cap on the sample tube and pour in the urine from the collection box. It is important that no other liquid enters the tube, or gets onto the outside of the tube
  7. Once the sample tube has been closed tightly, put it inside the protective packaging provided
  8. Place the packaging inside the test kit box along with the completed information form
  9. Seal the test kit box with the security sticker that will be provided
  10. Put it into the prepaid envelope provided and post it

Herpes test kits come with a swab inside a small bottle.

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water
  2. Complete the paperwork associated with a home STI test. If it hasn’t already been filled out, complete the request form which will come enclosed with your kit
  3. Fill in the required information on your sample label. For a herpes test kit, the label to fill in will be on the packet containing the swab
  4. Take out the swab and hold it by the cap, pointing towards you
  5. Gently, apply the tip of the swab onto an open sore or blister in your genital area, using the swab to collect fluid from the blister if possible
  6. When you have scabs that have crusted, lift the scab and collect them from the opened lesion’s base if you can
  7. Put the swab sample back into the tube and close it firmly
  8. Place the labeled sample into the provided prepaid envelope, along with the completed information form
  9. Post it

How long do STI test results take?

How long your STI test results take can depend on the type of STI being tested for, and the type of test taken. Some clinics may be able to provide results on the same day you took the test, while others may take a few days up to two weeks.

For home STI tests such as the STI test kits available at Chemist Click, you will be sent results confidentially via the communication method of your choice. Generally, results for chlamydia and gonorrhoea tests will be sent in two to three days, and results for herpes will be sent in three to five days of taking the test

STI test results

If your test results come back positive, you have an STI and will need treatment. You should make any recent sex partners aware of the diagnosis so that they can get tested. Some people may wish to visit their local sexual health clinic to discuss the next steps.

Alternatively, if you used a home STI test kit, your online pharmacy can discuss treatment options with you. At Chemist Click, we are able to prescribe treatment, and send out medication in discreet packaging.

At Chemist Click, we have a medical team that is there to answer any questions you may have. We also offer a range of genital herpes treatments and chlamydia treatments that can be purchased through our online pharmacy and sent out via express delivery.

If your results are negative, the test did not identify an STI. However, if you took your test too soon after you came into contact with an STI (before the ‘window period’ has finished), it may be recommended that you get retested.

How to get an STI test kit online

You can order STI test kits from Chemist Click using our discreet courier service. Once you have chosen the test kit and completed the payment process, your test kit will be sent to you via express delivery.

Each kit comes with full instructions. Once you have collected a sample and completed the required forms, you can send your sample to our partner laboratory using the prepaid envelope provided.
