What is Fexofenadine?
Fexofenadine is an effective, non-drowsy treatment for hay fever, hives (itchy skin) and other allergy symptoms. It contains the active ingredient Fexofenadine hydrochloride and is available in a tablet form. It is available in both 120mg and 180mg strengths.
Fexofenadine can be taken by adults and children, and is also sold under the brand names Allevia, Telfast and Treathay in the UK.
What is Fexofenadine used for?
Fexofenadine is used to relieve hay fever symptoms, and hives (itchy skin). Fexofenadine treats symptoms such as:
- Itchy eyes
- Watery eyes
- Runny nose
- Sneezing
- Hives (raised, itchy skin rash)
You can also use Fexofenadine to treat symptoms of conjunctivitis, other allergies, eczema and insect stings or bites.
How does Fexofenadine work?
Fexofenadine works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance that the body produces when you are having an allergic reaction. Because Fexofenadine is a non-drowsy antihistamine, it is less likely to cause drowsiness than some other antihistamines.
Which dose is right for me?
Fexofenadine 120mg tablets
For hay fever and allergies, the usual dose for adults and children aged 12 and over is 120mg, once a day. Continue to use the tablets for as long as you need to.
Fexofenadine 180mg tablets
For hives, or itchy skin lasting 6 weeks or more, the usual dose for adults and children aged 12 and over is 180mg once per day.
The following nasal sprays can be used together with Fexofenadine, for maximum relief of hay fever and allergy symptoms:

Fexofenadine Warnings
Fexofenadine is classified as a low-risk medication, and safe to take by most people. However, there may be instances where Fexofenadine is not suitable.
You should not take Fexofenadine if:
- You are allergic to Fexofenadine hydrochloride, or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet.
- You are due to have an allergy test.

Fexofenadine Interactions
Fexofenadine can interact with the following medications:
- Other antihistamines.
- Certain anti-cancer drugs such as apalutamide, tepotinib, vemurafenib.
- Indigestion remedies containing aluminum and magnesium (you should leave a 2-hour gap between doses).
- Certain antivirals – such as, velpatasvir, pibrentasvir.
- Certain antidepressants – such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine.
- Dronedarone – used to treat irregular heartbeat.
- Ketoconazole – used to treat fungal infections.
- Certain antibiotics – such as erythromycin, rifampicin.
- Letermovir – used during stem cell transplants.
- Teriflunomide – used to treat multiple sclerosis.
- Certain arthritis treatments – such as leflunomide, filgotinib.
- Grapefruit juice, orange juice and fruit juice can reduce the effectiveness of Fexofenadine.
Although Fexofenadine is safe to take with most medications, you should always inform your doctor or pharmacist of any medication you are taking, so that they can check for interactions.
Fexofenadine and Pregnancy/Breastfeeding
Do not take Fexofenadine if you are pregnant, unless advised by your doctor. There is limited evidence surrounding the safety of Fexofenadine in those that are pregnant.
Fexofenadine is safe to take if you are breastfeeding. It does not have a sedating effect, and very tiny amounts pass into the milk.
